I purchased 2 spring from Terrano2 ,little rusty .this is how i managed to make them shine like new ,using NaOH in a home made electrolyser and a battery charger. time is few hours.put the minus on the spring and plus(+) on a piece of iron .result is zero rust!

now my spring is waiting for primer and new paint

if you cannot understand from the pictures please don't do this at home because it may be dangerous for your life .

also explosive gasses(oxyhydrogen) are emanated! so, do the de-rust process outside !
